Drop Zones are the Functional “Rear Foyers”

It’s every woman’s dream. A place to come into the house, drop the keys( so you can find them later), charge the phone and the ipod. While we’re at it put down whatever we’re carrying; coffee, pocketbook, sippy cups, shopping bag, knapsack, baby. And yes sometimes all at the same time. Wouldn’t it be great to get create a “drop zone “?

The Idea of the “rear foyer” incorporating the drop zone has been a design element for many of our client’s homes since 2003. Design Basics looks at the rear foyer as a buffer between your garage and your living spaces.

Back in the day, access into your home from the garage was via your laundry room. Who wants to walk through a smelly laundry to get into you home? If you have kids in sports, you know what that multi-sensory experience is like. Ugh. The idea of the rear foyer eliminates that experience.

With so many of our friends entering our homes through the garage, the rear foyer is a breath of fresh air!

Thanks Greg for your insight. I have been a big fan of yours for many years. I in fact designed some home in NY in the late 1990′s with rear entrances. As a wife and mom of three boys my laundry room was always filled with smelly sports attire. That was my ” ah- ha ” moment.
